The Gender Roles, Equality, and Transformations (GREAT) Toolkit is designed to improve the reproductive health, reduce gender-based violence, and promote equal opportunities for adolescents in northern Uganda. It includes interactive games, a serial radio drama, and materials to facilitate discussions and actions within community groups.

Main Contribution

The toolkit aims to support adolescents (10-19 years) in northern Uganda by addressing reproductive health, reducing gender-based violence (GBV), and promoting equal opportunities between boys and girls. It provides fun and engaging activities, including a serial radio drama, interactive games, and materials to facilitate dialogue, reflection, and action among adolescents, parents, and the community.

  • The toolkit is designed for groups in the community, including school clubs, youth groups, agricultural co-ops, village savings and loan groups, religious groups, and others. It is intended for anyone interested in learning, discussing, and initiating action to improve the lives and health of adolescents.

  • The toolkit is flexible, allowing various community-based groups to select activities based on their ages, needs, and interests. It can be used by school clubs, youth groups, agricultural co-ops, village savings and loan groups, religious groups, and others. The activities can be organized during regular meetings, social gatherings, or community events, and no trained facilitator is required.

GBV Prevention

  • The toolkit addresses gender-based violence (GBV) by promoting discussions on growing up free from violence, with equal opportunities between boys and girls. It encourages actions that make families, schools, and communities supportive of young people. The materials cover topics such as reproductive health, gender roles, and GBV prevention.

Creating Normative Change

  • The toolkit contributes to normative change by fostering discussions and actions related to reproductive health, gender roles, and gender-based violence. It engages adolescents, parents, and communities in dialogue and reflection, encouraging positive changes in attitudes and behaviors.

How it could be adapted to the communities

  • The toolkit is designed for adaptation to different community settings. It emphasizes flexibility, allowing groups to select activities based on their specific needs and interests. The inclusion of materials in local languages (Acholi and Lango) enhances its adaptability to the cultural context of northern Uganda.
